Project Dolly's Quick Reads, but hands-on. This is the curriculum we use to actually teach bioengineering, not just write about it, built around one running example: a duckweed experiment that touches energy, water, and data all at once.
Please reach us at wangerwin6@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No. The syllabus is written so a teacher, parent, or club leader with zero bioengineering background can run it. Every concept is explained before it's used.
Middle schoolers through early high schoolers, roughly grades 6-9. Younger or older groups can usually flex with minor tweaks.
Three 45-60 minute sessions, or you can compress it into one longer workshop day if that fits your schedule better.
Under $30 in materials for the DIY Lab Guide activities, jars, duckweed (or another fast-growing plant), pH strips, and a light source. Most of it can be pulled from a recycling bin.
No. Everything runs on a kitchen counter or classroom desk. No fume hood, no specialized equipment.
Yes. The syllabus, DIY Lab Guide, and Pre/Post Quiz are all free to download and reuse.
Yes, it's meant to be adapted. Swap in a different plant, adjust session length, or focus on just one unit if that's all you have time for.
The Pre/Post Quiz measures comprehension before and after the workshop, so you get an actual before/after number instead of just a gut feeling.
Reach out. I'm looking for the first few partner classrooms and groups to pilot this with. See the Get Involved page for details.
